Reset strategies are an important tool for moms! And you need to find the ones that work best for you.
Do you ever have a morning when everything seems to be going wrong?
You woke up late, you realized you forgot to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer, your toddler dumps your coffee over on the counter, and just as your heading out the door to take your kids to daycare, your youngest blows out their diaper and you have to go back inside to change…everything on you and the baby.
On “those days” you have a choice. You can let that dumpster fire of a morning bleed into the afternoon and then into the evening and mark the whole day as a fail, or you can use reset strategies to get out of the funk, put the past in the past, and start fresh.
My favorite ways to reset
A reset is such a personal thing, it really is based on your preferences and also the vibe that day. The idea is to pick something that will take you out of the rut/funk/MEH pattern you’re in, clear your head, and remind you that things can be great.
While it might be tempting, a reset should not be scrolling on social media or watching TV. Screens just add to the clutter in your head during that moment instead of helping to clear it out. Here are my favorite ways to reset.
Silent walk
Walking is my go-to reset strategy!
And while I love to go on a long walk and listen to a podcast, when I need to reset it’s best to make it a slow, silent walk. I think the silent part is key for me because between our toddlers, work, and my daily listen to The Toast or my latest Audible, I’m rarely in silence and letting my brain thaw out.
A silent walk, especially one outside, is a great way to clear my head because it incorporates movement and a meditative state. Without a doubt my top recommendation!
Acupressure mat
After eyeing an acupressure mat for years I finally purchased one on Black Friday and I’m shocked by how much I like it and how consistently I use it. It’s a great tool to help relieve my headaches, but it’s also become one of my favorite ways to reset while I’m working from home during the day. I normally lay on it for 10 minutes in silence so it’s a double hitter — physical and mental stress relief.
Dance party
Nothing like a quick all-out dance party to reset the day! I do this in the middle of the workday, but I also do this when I’m at home with the girls on a weekend and hit a wall. I tend to gravitate towards the current pop banger or a throw-back that I know all the words to like Destiny’s Child Survivor or Akon So Paid.
Here’s a playlist I made on Spotify if you need some inspiration.
Deep breathing in fresh air
Another reset, that I like the most on a chilly Fall day, is to go outside sit on the front step of my house, close my eyes, and simply do some deep breathing. It’s simple, but effective — and you can do it anywhere.
