If you’ve made overnight oats before you know they are truly as easy as dumping everything in, putting it in the fridge, and coming back to enjoy in the morning. If you haven’t made them, just know it really is as easy as it sounds. And if you’re looking for an easy breakfast with a punch of protein, I hope this blog is exactly the inspiration you were looking for to get your day started out right.
Easy protein overnight oats
I have a go-to overnight oats recipe that you can use as the base of your protein overnight oats. I make it so often, I have the recipe memorized. And I bet you already have all of the ingredients (except maybe chia seeds depending on your style).
So, how to make protein overnight oats — add one of these four protein powerhouse ingredients to your base recipe! Some of the add-ins require a slight tweak to the recipe to get the right texture, check out the details below.
Overnight oats recipe protein-packed ingredients
Peanut butter
My go-to overnight oats recipe already contains peanut butter. See! It doesn’t have to be difficult, just add in as much peanut butter as you want for a little boost of protein.
Yogurt
Make your protein oats overnight with yogurt when you want a creamier texture. Before I went dairy-free for breastfeeding my dairy-sensitive little one I preferred overnight oats with Greek yogurt. YUM.
When you add yogurt cut the amount of milk you add to your recipe, it does nearly the same job as the milk to help soak the oats and chia seeds. In my go-to recipe, I like to add 2 cups milk and 1 cup of yogurt instead of 3 cups milk. Play around and see what ratio gives you the texture you want!
Collagen
Adding collagen to overnight oats doesn’t have to change the flavor at all, just add a scoop or four and mix it in like everything else. My favorite collagen is from Vital Proteins and it’s unflavored. I’ve added it to smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or even my green juice (Athletic Greens).
Protein powder
Just like collagen, you can mix in your favorite protein powder to your overnight oats without changing your recipe.
Nuts
You can add nuts to your overnight oats recipe or you can sprinkle some on right before you eat for a little added crunch or, depending on what you choose, a little added salt. Sliced almonds and salted cashews are my favorite.
