Is Herbal Essence good for hair? I truly never thought I would say yes to that question, but I have been really enjoying Herbal Essences new line of clean products called bio:renew.
After years of using the same shampoo (Avalon Organics), I entered postpartum after our third child and my hair did not agree with my shampoo anymore. My scalp ended up greasy, but somehow my hair feel incredibly dry at the same time so I went in search of another option only to stumble upon Herbal Essences’ bio:renew line.
Herbal Essences brings me back to the 90s
Herbal Essence was kind of “the it” shampoo during my elementary and early middle school years. Affordable shampoo with fruit, flowery scents, and memorable commercialsΒ that made you feel awkward while sitting with your parents (iykyk). For me Herbal Essence fits right in with “skintimate or not” commercials. Again, iykyk.
Is Herbal Essence Good for Hair?
As I’ve started to use cleaner hair care alternatives over the years, I didn’t really give much thought to Herbal Essences. It definitely fell into the “very scented and affordable prices so probably full of a bunch of crap” category of hair care.Β For many years, I’ve been really into Avalon Organics shampoo and conditioner. It was the first shampoo and conditioner with clean ingredients that didn’t cost an arm and a leg and that actually lathered when I put it into my hair. But when my hair changed recently, my sister told me she started to use Herbal Essences and that it had a good score on EWG so I gave it a try!
Let’s see what EWG says
Along my journey to switching my personal care and household products to cleaner versions, I have found the EWG app to be extremely helpful.
EWG (Environmental Working Group) is an organization dedicated to shining a spotlight on things in our world that pose a risk to our health and they are very people focused. They have created an app that evaluates the ingredients of our personal care and household products and rates them.Β So I started to search some new clean shampoo and conditioner options and I looked up the Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioning that my sister recommended on EWG. This particular line from Herbal Essences is EWG Certified, which basically means it’s the cleanest clean and gets EWGs stamp of approval.
I was pretty shocked!
It felt too good to be true. The price is still reasonable, the product is clean, but will it lather up well? Does it smell nice? Will it play nice with my new postpartum hair? I found a pack of the shampoo and conditioner on Amazon, but decided to add the Eucalyptus + Potent Aloe to my Target pickup order for later that day.

I didn’t realize this the first time I bought the shampoo and conditioner, but there is a curl definer shampoo and conditioner in the Herbal Essence bio:renew line. It’s the orange bottle, mango + potent aloe scented.
Since I switched over to Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner, I also thought I’d try out their mousse and gel for my curly girl hair routine and I’m a big fan of them all!
Is Herbal Essences good for hair?
