“I don’t like my curly hair.”
– Hayes Nordquist, 4 years old.
My heart broke into little pieces when I heard her say that! Check out this girl’s curls…
Hearing her say that also reminded me of a little girl with brown curly hair and string bean legs, just like Hayes, that probably said the exact same thing 30 years ago. (Sorry, mom!)
My mom did the best she could to help me with my hair. And I’d say for gal with a head full of straight hair and no access to curly girl Instagram, she did pretty great.
I went through waves of liking my curly hair and hating it over the years and after going through pregnancies and postpartum, my curls changed and I totally gave up on them.
But when I heard “I don’t like my curly hair” from our Hayesy-girl, I was suddenly determined to recommit to my curls and figure them out. Since that day in early 2023, I haven’t blow-dried my hair or turned on any heat hair tools.
I’ll be honest, there have been days where I have been super frustrated with my hair since starting this journey. And HOLY MACS it’s wild how much trial and error is involved to figure out the best method and the best products for your hair.
I’ve tried the bowl method, the microfiber towel, the t-shirt, and the pineapple. I’ve bought custard, gel, clarifying shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, mousse, and three different brushes.
It’s a wild time over here! It all started from my desire to help Hayes embrace her curls and maybe even like them 🙂
I’ve realized is that it’s a journey for me too. And there’s a part of me that feels like I’m coming back to myself through this curly girl hair journey and it feels good.
