Memorial Day Weekend is almost upon us. Long weekend, American pride, what’s not to love? We usually go to the lake each year, but I decided that this was the year that I was going to cross marathon off of my bucket list by running the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, MI. Long story short—I got injured and the marathon has been postponed to an unknown date somewhere in the not so near future.
Silver lining. We have Memorial Day weekend open for plans!
Here are some things we’re thinking about doing.
Make a day trip to South Haven
It’s the perfect little beach town just 40 minutes from our house. We’ll go to the beach, eat lunch outside, and “bop around downtown”, as my mother would say. Plus, Sherman’s Ice Cream.
Set up camp, even if it’s in our own backyard
We might be spending a day camping with Jeff’s family, still figuring out the details. But heck, if we aren’t going to the lake or going camping, you better believe we’re going to camp in our own backyard just for the fun of it.
…as I think about it more I’m wondering how much fun this will actually be with an almost one year old. Maybe only Jeff will camp in the backyard.
Devour some Plainwell Ice Cream
Yes, ice cream is on my list twice and I’m all about it!
Each year since Jeff and I have met we make our first bike ride of the season together a trip to Plainwell Ice Cream. We’ll see if we go by bike or car with Hayes, but you can bet I’ll have that oatmeal chip on lockdown.
Have a date night (or two) with my smokin’ hot hubby
We are embarrassingly behind on our 52 dates for the year. So we will get at least one more in the books this weekend. Who knows, maybe it will be that annual bike ride to Plainwell Ice Cream.
Go to the zoo in cool(er) weather
When I get super hot, I also get super grumpy. So the zoo in the middle of the summer heat isn’t my idea of fun. I’ll do it for the kids but I’d rather go when it’s cooler. Luckily, the Michigan is still warming up so let’s do it!
Question for the parents out there—how does an 11 month old handle the zoo? Too young? Just right? More chaos than fun? Perhaps we’ll see.
Have a (super) slow morning
The mornings are my absolute favorite time of the day. I want to have one of those mornings where we cook a breakfast far too big for our family, snuggle up to watch a show or put a puzzle together, and we all just stay in our pjs until noon.
Let’s do a little bit of nothing, please!
Cookout and bonfire at my parents house with my in town siblings
Rumor has it my parents want to have a cookout and bonfire this weekend since we all won’t be at the lake. I am so down.
Spend this weekend enjoying and remembering
No matter what your holiday plans are for Memorial Day weekend, take time and space to remember those who served. What’s amazing is that we have the opportunity to enjoy a long weekend because people fought for our freedom and our safety.
For anyone that died serving in our Armed Forces, thank you. For the families that lost a loved one serving in the United States Armed Forces, thank you. And for anyone that is currently serving on our United States Armed Forces, thank you.
